One of the best shows ever made - but NOT for kids.

Firstly, just to be clear: this show is AMAZING. I firmly believe it is one of the best television shows ever to grace our screens. I can't wait to show it to my daughter. She is going to love its clever dialogue, intricate plotting, and slow-burn drama. She is going to love the beautifully realised characters, and the complex interplay between them. She's going to love the mysteries, and the excitement, and the utterly delicious humour of it. And I'm going to love showing her a show that celebrates both intelligence and empathy, and continually reminds us that one is not enough without the other. But I'm going to have to wait, because this show also has the potential to be extremely disturbing and frightening.Yes, it's about people who track down killers, and there's corpses, etc. Honestly I couldn't care less about any of that; my daughter adores Agatha Christie books (and movies), and indeed The Hunger Games, and I consider those to be fine for her. As has been mentioned by others, there is very little on-screen violence here. And actually, some episodes would be fine for a 13 or possibly even 12 year old. But that's the problem: SOME episodes. Parents should be aware that the psychological impact of many episodes of this show goes well beyond blood spatter and gunshot wounds. The very first episode is in fact one of the ones I found a bit disturbing, and the scene in question contained no violence at all - but it did contain a horrible creeping realisation of what was going on, and how this killer worked (I won't go into it; I don't do spoilers). Some episodes in later seasons would be even more problematic. This is not a show that relies on jump-scares or a beastie chasing around and trying to eat people. That kind of fear is immediate and easily forgotten. This is a show that has been very cleverly and deliberately written to reach deep into the human psyche, find the vulnerabilities hiding there, and oh-so-gently start to squeeze...For the record, yes there is also a dominatrix with all the attendant issues that might raise (only a problem in one episode, and it's actually less of a drama than you might expect). There is drug use, not always with any real consequences (although the heavier examples of this occur much later - not really an issue in the first couple of seasons). There are also very complex, very intense, and sometimes devastating, emotional relationships between major characters (and no, I don't mean they are sexual, but in some cases they may be a bit heavy for younger viewers). It is a masterpiece. But it isn't for kids, or even tweens. Older teenagers will be fine, and in general will be much better placed to appreciate it anyway.

I watched when I was 13 with my 11 year old sister and neither of us had any problems. Some blood/gore but nothing most kids haven't been exposed to already.

Brilliant work

This show is fantastic interpretation of the well-known book that was written by Arthur Conan Doyle. As for me, I read this book like 15 years ago. This show shows us how the story of Sherlock Holmes could be happen in our times. So, from the first episodes I found a lot of things that was shown in a new way. Moreover, there are a lot of different storylines that tangle in a differnt way and then, in the end of the episode you are understanding what WAS THAT. The last episode is something that i couldn't understand until I've watched it one more time.I'd like to forget this show and watch it like in the first time.Summing up, in my opnion this show is obligitory for each person who read a book or intrested in detective stories. It's really breathtaking and amazing show.

Intellect Wins the Day in this Series Recommended for All (although specifically Recommended for older kids and above)

Sherlock is a fantastic series that plays more like a fast-release collection of movies that all exist in a canonical succession. Each story is extremely clever, from the interesting mysteries, to the cryptic yet engaging clues, to the human interactions, be it the motivations of those in question for their actions, to just the banter between Sherlock and the others. If there's one major reason I recommend this series for older children is not because it stimulates the brain with its intricate machinations, but it also shows the value of intellect. Sherlock only wins because he is smarter than those around him, and this is despite the fact that his allies are all smart as well, and his enemies are sometimes brilliant. The other reason I recommend this to older kids is because there is a well-woven theme on how Intellect is not everything; there's a somewhat cliche but nonetheless effective line in the opening episode: "Sherlock Holmes is a great man Mr Watson, and if we're lucky, one day, he might just be a good one." This series openly admits that you will only emotionally distance yourself from those who care for you if you fly solely by your intellect, as Sherlock does (as does his equally emotionally distant and jaded brother). In a sense, Sherlock almost doubles as a study as to why humanity is still important in a world of increasing machinery, as Sherlock himself is practically a fusion of a person and an AI - understanding, ultra-brilliant and largely apathetic. This is made bolstered further by the fact that Sherlock is never portrayed as mean-spirited or entirely uncaring; he is often times unpleasant to be around, and this is purely unintentional on his part.I could also do into the technical and artistic aspects of the series, as these are actually very high, with solid cinematography for a television series, well-constructed editing, and some truly unique storytelling methods implemented by creative composite overlays and some very creative scene-transitions. But these only enhance a series that, with these writers and these actors, was already reaching for top already. The final line is this - Everyone should see this show, and the only reason I don't recommend children seeing it is because they will likely find it too complicated to keep up with (as well as likely bored by the slow-burn nature, as it's the complex story and character beats that hold up the show's slower pace). It has some fantastic messages about aspiring to understand everything, from seeing the big picture to observing the small things, while making sure you don't lose site of the people around you. Nobody will ever be as smart as Sherlock and as empathetic as Watson, but this show wisely asks you try your best anyway, and I simply cannot think of a more positive message than that.

Amazing, exciting show!

This show is very addicting and you quickly find yourself getting into the plot. Following Sherlock and John’s many adventures makes for a fantastic, engaging series and you can talk for hours about each episode once you’ve finished it. There are definitely some sexual innuendoes, crude language and violence along the way but nothing a teenager hasn’t been exposed to previously. If you are concerned about sexual themes I recommend you skip the first episode of season 2 however, as it contains a dominatrix that shows herself nude, uses her tools on Sherlock and tries seducing him. It is a great episode but perhaps not for a younger teen whose parents don’t want them exposed to those themes quite yet.

A Must Watch!

Based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1887 novel A Study in Scarlet, BBC’s Sherlock follows the adventures of famous British detective Sherlock Holmes and retired Army doctor John Watson. Over the course of its seven year run time, the four seasons showcased the unlikely friendship of a former/recovering drug addict and a trauma-ridden war veteran. Their chance meeting turned quickly into a high speed chase through London to catch a serial murderer. Realizing that their partnership in solving unsolvable crimes could be used for good, the duo, along with both friends and enemies, made their names known across the country. With the problems in the show having basis in real world struggles, such as murder, drug abuse, adultery, the loss of a loved one, and the struggles of raising a child, Sherlock is one of the most ground-breaking shows released to date. Its positive messages about finding family in the strangest of places and overcoming great odds to do the right thing help people of all ages understand the trials and tribulations of the real world.
